This hands-on workshop will introduce you to the purpose and importance of museum collections and why standardised preparation methods are essential for studying and comparing insect anatomy. You’ll learn how insects are stored before preparation, how specimens are carefully relaxed and positioned, the specialist equipment used in the pinning process and, leave understanding the importance of conscious and sustainable collection methods.
Guided by museum experts, participants will explore pinning methods used for different insect orders and gain practical insight into how specimens are prepared for long-term storage and study.
About the series: Queensland Museum’s ID It! Citizen science identification workshops are a hands-on event series designed to build your confidence and skills in identifying local wildlife and contributing meaningful data to national research projects. Led by Queensland Museum Discovery Centre specialists, these workshops are welcoming, accessible and suitable for curious beginners through to keen nature enthusiasts.
