This practical masterclass delves into the photobook as an artform. Local artist Katelyn-Jane Dunn will demonstrate ideas through her own photographic works, and guide participants through a variety of other examples and approaches.
Participants will bring 30-50 printed photographs that explore a single narrative or theme. Katelyn will guide the group through an interactive, curatorial sequencing process using the printed images, placement and text ideas as visual storytelling tools.
The goal of the masterclass is to introduce editing and sequencing within the context of the artist book, with a focus on storytelling. NB. this is NOT a digital/computer workshop – participants will use hands-on cutting/pasting/editing processes to plan their artist’s book structure.
Participants will bring:
30–50 printed photographs (standard size, approx. 4x6 inches). Katelyn suggests you bring photos from a single project or narrative.
A message from the artist tutor:
I’ll begin with a short discussion on the photobook as a form, using my own work alongside a selection of other books to demonstrate different approaches.
From there, we’ll move into a group editing session. Students will either blu-tack their images to the wall or lay them out on the floor, and we’ll work around the room discussing editing principles. With peer and guided feedback, participants will refine their selection down to around 20–24 images.
After a short break, we’ll focus on sequencing, again working physically with the images in the space.
To finish, students will create a rough A4 pamphlet-style book by folding A3 sheets (no formal binding, just stapled or clipped). They’ll place their images using glue, tape, or blu-tack.
We’ll close with a discussion around pacing, image sizing, incorporating text etc, and broader storytelling possibilities within the book form.
