Philosophy Café: Money and Politics - How Much Should They Mix?
About this Event
Hi, it’s Vanessa, your ENLIGHTENMENT host.
Our current political climate is deeply fractured by questions of economic inequality, corporate influence, and the moral responsibilities of the state. But these challenges are not new. Thousands of years ago, the greatest minds of ancient China were locked in an intense philosophical battle over the exact same issues: Is wealth the lifeblood of a healthy society, or is it a corrupting force that destroys the political fabric?
Join us at our next Philosophy Café. for an evening of deep thought and lively discussion with Derek Lam, professor of philosophy at CSU Sacramento, who will guide us through a fascinating, high-stakes debate from ancient Chinese philosophy. He’ll unpack these ancient arguments, revealing how rival schools of thought viewed the role of money and wealth in governance. Then we’ll explore how these foundational ideas still shape global politics today.
No prior background in philosophy or Chinese history is required. Just bring your curiosity, your questions and an appetite for meaningful conversation.
Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 for students. There will be light refreshments, but BYO is very much encouraged.
