PHEW summer visit to Ayshire
About this Event
This year, the Panel of Historical Engineering Works (PHEW) will be taking a day coach to some of Ayrshire's historic transport structures, starting in Glasgow at 09:45.
The group will head to Kilmarnock and start at the Kilmarnock Railway Viaduct, which dates from 1850 and still in use. It was designed by railway civil engineers John Miller and Thomas Grainger.
From there, the coach will travel to Ballochmyle Viaduct (1848) near Mauchline. It is the highest railway viaduct in the United Kingdom, at 52 metres, and is still in use. It is another John Miller design. From Ballochmyle, a short trip will be taken to Laigh Milton Viaduct (1815) at Gatehead, where the group will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the conservation of William Jessop's innovative multi-span arch structure.
After lunch in Troon, the group will conclude the day with visits to Ayr Auld Brig, and Brig O'Doon at Alloway. Brig O'Doon, is famous for its key role in Robert Burns' Tam O'Shanter. Both bridges are hundreds of years old and have been much repaired and modified, but are still in daily use.
From Ayr, the coach will return to Glasgow via Kilmarnock and arrive at 18:15.
Potential attendees should note that access to both Laigh Milton viaduct and Ballochmyle viaduct are along rough or steep paths and that to Laigh Milton involves climbing over two or three styles.
