About the Petticoat Painters
The Petticoat Painters began in 1950 when Martha Hartman won first place in a Sarasota exhibition, only to receive a certificate of participation rather than prize money like the male winners. In 1953, she organized the first Petticoat Painters show, hand-picking women artists to exhibit together. Since then, the group has welcomed generations of creative women, building a legacy of mentorship and artistic camaraderie that continues today.
The current exhibit features 24 local artists, each with her own unique style. Petticoat Painters is one of the oldest continuously exhibiting women’s art groups in the U.S., with nearly 75 years of history celebrating creativity and community.
