We are inviting you to the second workshop with Peter Phillippson in Lithuania! This time he is leading a seminar at Vilnius gestalt institute about group processes in Gestalt Therapy.

This workshop offers a theory of groups and group psychotherapy, based on the Gestalt Therapy theory of Self, and informed by present-day thinking about human intersubjectivity,
especially the work of Daniel Stern. In both these approaches, self is seen as arising from what Stern calls the ‘intersubjective matrix’ rather than belonging to the individual. Thus a ‘group matrix’ with different norms and rules than a person’s everyday life will inevitably call out different self-possibilities, and this, rather than an individual exploration, becomes the basis for therapeutic effectiveness.
Grounding the group in the Gestalt theory of relational self or Stern’s intersubjective matrix highlights an important tenet of the Manchester model of Gestalt groupwork: that the three
areas of group therapeutic focus – individual, interpersonal and whole-group – are not separable, but rather each elucidates the other. What the individual does is done in the matrix of the group situation; and the group can pick up and amplify what is importantly unfinished for one of its members. Therefore, any exploration would typically involve a continual movement between these levels, rather than staying with one group member, or conversely with the whole group.
In this workshop we will explore this foundation of Gestalt group therapy approach by theory presentation and discussions, experiential work and small group practice.

About Peter Philippson:
Peter Philippson, M.Sc. (Gestalt Psychotherapy) is a UKCP Registered Gestalt psychotherapist and trainer, a Teaching and Supervising Member of the Gestalt Psychotherapy Training Institute UK, a founder member of Manchester Gestalt Centre, Full Member of the New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy, Senior Trainer for GITA (Slovenia), faculty member, IpsiG (Turin), advisory board member, Centre for Somatic Studies, founder member of IG-FEST and a guest trainer for many training programmes internationally. He has been working as a psychotherapist for 36 years. He is Past President
of the International Association for the Advancement of Gestalt Therapy.
Peter is the author of "Self in Relation", pub. Gestalt Journal Press, "The Emergent Self" pub. Karnack/UKCP, "Gestalt Therapy: Roots and Branches" pub. Karnack and "The ‘Active Principle’ in Gestalt Therapy and Other Essays", and many other chapters and articles. He is a teacher (4th dan) and student of traditional Aikido.
