What ever happened to Sheila Legge?

Coming straight from the Adelaide Salon Gala at The Royal Pavilion - Brighton, The Writer’s Mark presents – Perturbation - a physical theatre performance that pays homage to Sheila Legge (1911-1949) – a writer and performance Artist who is known for her involvement within the Surrealist Movement. This performance is inspired by key events in Sheila Legge’s life and will be performed in Edinburgh this coming August.

“There is currently very little information surrounding Shelia Legge in the public domain – what began as three separate pieces has now evolved, through books (poems and quotes) and monumental ‘fragments’ of Sheila’s life. Meet Sheila, a young aspiring artist who longs to be part of something – the surrealists. Watch as she moves through space and time – abandoning her forming world as a wife and mother to join the growing surrealist movement in 1936.

Through use of personified mime, physical theatre, dance and prop manipulation Natasha Higdon and Stephanie Prieto Trincado move through the space - come and watch as they melt and shift through surrealist hieroglyphics of fragments from Shelia Legge’s encounters, from her friendship with David Gascoyne to her meeting with Salvador Dalí; moments in time that have shaped art, literature and theatre – as they seek to discover - what happened to Sheila Legge?

“We wanted to highlight her courage in choosing to preserve her artistic creativity despite the constraints imposed on her by the role of motherhood. My main motivation is to showcase her strength as a woman, artist and mother.” Stephanie Prieto Trincado

The Writer’s Mark is a surrealist company, based in Brighton (United Kingdom) that focuses on celebrating/exploring the ‘worlds’ of surreal writers and visionaries from our past; through the mediums of art and theatre.

The Company delves into the psychology and visceral imprint of each writer – their legacy, what they leave behind and how this can be interpretated through physical theatre, art, mime, text and ensemble. Research and a ‘need’ to explore the human condition, processes and the livelihood of each writer is an essential part of the process.
