People power - a walk through North Kensington
About this Event
The people of North Kensington have campaigned for social justice for decades to improve housing, secure public spaces and confront racism. The walk traces this buzzing neighbourhood’s 150-year history of resistance.
You’ll hear the fascinating stories behind a community garden sprouted from a tyre dump; one of the UK’s first purpose-built working men’s clubs; a private garden square transformed into a play space; and an arts centre that was once an abandoned church. The Tabernacle now serves as the base for organizing the Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s biggest street party.
And it’s impossible to ignore the stories of this neighbourhood’s dominating icons – Erno Goldfinger’s Trellick Tower and the Westway. Love them or hate them, they both contribute to this neighbourhood’s unique character.
The walk will end at the Tabernacle, which remains a bastion of Black culture, especially carnival arts, in a rapidly changing neighbourhood. It's about 11 minutes walk away from Westbourne Park and Ladbroke Grove underground stations.
