Pawpaw Chapter FNPS Field Trip to Hontoon Island
About this Event
Enjoy a lush, remote island accessible only by boat. Located in the St. Johns River in Volusia County. Discover the beauty of Hontoon Island State Park along the many nature trails. Evidence of Native American habitation over thousands of years can be witnessed as we hike through the park. We will explore pine flatwoods that have been restored and maintained by prescribed fire, cypress laden river floodplain, and a 300 year-old live oak tree at Bear Tree Landing along the serene atmosphere of Snake Creek. Frequent fires in the flatwoods increases our chances of seeing many rare wildflowers, including orchids, lilies, grasses and much more. Optional after the trip: Self-guided 3-mile round trip hike The Hammock Hiking Nature Trail to an ancient shell mound.
