Description

Children who have experienced trauma are often physically more fragile and easily dysregulated by their internal states and external environments. This class teaches you how to create Felt-Safety, ensuring your child not only is safe but feels safe enough to learn and grow. You will gain tools to help children regulate their "bodies" through physical activity, deep breathing, and weighted items. Transitions are often a major trigger for children with trauma histories because the part of their brain responsible for planning operates at a deficit. You will learn to use time notices, visual schedules, and daily rituals—such as a special handshake or bedtime routine—to make the world predictable and reduce the "fight, flight, or freeze" response .

The final lesson focuses on building social and behavioral competence through Proactive and Responsive strategies. The goal of correction in TBRI® is not punishment, but to mentor, coach, and maintain connection. We begin with Proactive Strategies practiced during "calm times," such as giving choices and compromises . You can avoid a power struggle by learning how to share appropriate power and teach them that their words matter. You’ll walk away with an understanding of how to disarm defiance and repair relational differences.

TBRI is based on the research and methods developed by the late Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross, from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University.

Presenter Info: The class is taught by Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI®) Practitioner, Tristen McGhee. As an Early Childhood Educator, Tristen is an adoptive mom, writer, and advocate for foster/kinship/adopted children. She has substantial experience working with vulnerable families to find a path of hope and healing.
