‘Be fearless in pursuit of what sets your soul on
fire.’
I love to create things. If I could do it all day long
every day, I would. There’s a soul-deep connection in
the work you do with your hands. Handcrafting has
been a part of me since I was young, and I’ve created
a lot of different things over the years.
After working several years in the accounting field, I
was looking for a creative balance and began taking
jewelry classes. Hooked on the processes, jewelry
making became my creative passion in my off hours. I
am self-taught in some areas, class taught in others. I
started designing jewelry, opened my business, D’zyn
By Dana; and twenty-two years later, I still love
creating jewelry.
Creativity has many different ways of expression. In
the midst of jewelry making, I took a painting class. I
wanted to approach shapes and color from a different
perspective. I had taken a few art courses in college
but had not worked much in acrylics, watercolors or
inks. That was thirteen years ago, and I am still
hopelessly in love with the art of painting. Painting
and jewelry are my perfect mix. They each entice,
encourage and challenge the other, always spurring
each other on. So, now my weeks are a mix of both
my loves.
Painting in abstract has drawn me to its very core.
The freedom of layering marks and color on canvas
has given me a way to express the emotions of the
moment, wherever that may lead. Some of my
paintings begin with a purpose. Others evolve through
the layers, directing their own path. Many of the
marks I make are loose quirky shapes, things that are
crooked or slightly off. I prefer drawing with my
non-dominant (left) hand. It creates marks that are
less contrived, more abstract. I love experimenting
with textures. Most often texture and shapes compete
with contrast and color. Then, using negative space
techniques, paint the images I see emerging. It’s fun
and sometimes surprising to see what the final
painting looks like. My favorite surfaces are paper,
canvas and birch board. Acrylic is my go-to guy; but
watercolor, ink, and charcoal like to sneak their way
in. My process of painting is very free-flowing and
organic; pleasurable in its unfolding, expansive in the
knowledge it reveals, and occasionally surprising in its
emergence.
Welcome to my color world!
