About this Event
Palayok Clay Workshop
Palayok is the traditional clay pot used for preparing stews and medicines in the Philippines. We will be sculpting and designing our own ornamental vessels that can be used as a container for jewelry, herbs, altar adornments, or whatever you can imagine! The workshop will open with a tea meditation to ground us with intention before we dive into the creative process.
Join us as we slow down with the earth at our Palayok Clay Workshop! Get your hands dirty and unleash your inner artist as you mold and shape clay into beautiful masterpieces. Our experienced instructor, Mayari, will guide you through various techniques and help you bring your ideas to life. No prior experience is needed - just bring your creativity and enthusiasm! This in-person event is perfect for all ages, so grab your friends and family for a memorable day of crafting together. Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to explore the world of clay art!
We will cover the following clay techniques (no experience required!):
- Pinch pots
- Coil building
- Slip & Scoring
- Design elements
- Dryness stages of clay and how to work with each stage
- Origins of pottery in the Philippines, how it has been sourced, and uses of traditional palayok

Clay Workshop facilitated by Mayari (IG - @mayari.sol)in collaboration with Artillery Ceramics (IG- @artilleryag)
Mayari is a ceramic teaching artist. She is currently rooting in Ohlone & Yelamu Land (SF Bay Area), and has lineages tracing back to Bicol and Batangas regions in the Philippines. She has been connecting with the practice of ceramics since 2011, and has been facilitating clay workshops (handbuilding and wheel throwing) for the last three years, teaching in the Bay and in the Philippines. She enjoys creating safe spaces for weaving art, healing and self discovery in the workshops she curates. Reflecting on her own cultural traditions and diaspora, many of her pieces are adorned with work inspired by Filipinx textiles, traditional batok, and native ecology and plants.
If you are interested in attending this workshop, please register ahead of time. Capcity limited to 15 participants. I will send a confirmation email and additional information regarding the workshop.
Looking forward to connecting with you, the clay, and community!
Blessings up,
Mayari <3
