Paint Like the Masters: One Week Renaissance Oil Workshop

The Alliance for the Arts invites artists of all skill levels to step back in time and learn the timeless techniques of the Renaissance during an intensive one-week Old Masters Oil Painting Workshop led by renowned classical painter and instructor Tom Humbert. The workshop will take place August 3 through August 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, at the Alliance for the Arts, located at 10091 McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers.
Designed for beginners and experienced painters alike, this immersive workshop introduces students to the traditional methods used by the great masters of the Renaissance. Participants will learn the classical process from start to finish, beginning with a carefully structured underdrawing and progressing through monochromatic underpainting to establish form, value, and light.
Once a strong foundation has been created, students will explore the rich techniques of color application, layering, and glazing, methods that have been used for centuries to achieve depth, luminosity, and subtle transitions within a painting. The workshop will include daily demonstrations, hands-on instruction, and personalized guidance from Humbert, with a midday break for lunch.
By the end of the week, participants may complete an original oil painting using authentic Renaissance methods while gaining a deeper understanding of classical craftsmanship that can be applied to their own artistic practice.

Humbert who currently resides in Tampa, Fl brings a unique combination of scientific precision and artistic expertise to his teaching. He earned a degree in Physics from North Carolina State University and pursued both undergraduate and graduate-level painting studies through the university’s School of Design. His artistic training was further shaped through private study with the late Frank Covino, a respected master of classical painting methods.
In addition to decades of painting experience, Humbert has studied art conservation extensively, restoring more than 100 paintings and frames. He has taught numerous workshops throughout his career, helping students develop a strong understanding of traditional techniques. His instruction emphasizes the foundational principles of Renaissance painting, including underdrawing, underpainting, color theory, glazing, and portraiture.
Special attention will be given to portrait techniques, including the methods Renaissance artists used to create the illusion that a subject’s eyes follow the viewer throughout a room. Through careful placement, subtle shading, and strategic highlights, students will gain insight into one of art history’s most enduring visual effects.
