Join us for the first Wairarapa Pride parade, in Featherston!
We’re still waiting on confirmation of the route, but the aim is to keep it more residential, and avoid the highway.
If you’d like to show your support for Pride in Featherston, we welcome to join in the parade, or to spectate!
We welcome our LGBTQ+, rainbow and takatāpui whānau, allies, members of the community - anyone who would like to dance, skip/cycle/scoot or walk along our parade route. We’ll have a pilot and a tail vehicle, but will not be inviting other motorised vehicles (besides mobility scooters and wheelchairs etc.) to join in the parade. This is just to help us keep it safer and more manageable.
Our goal is to start walking at 12pm, and we’re estimating we’ll finish the route at about 1pm. This of course depends on numbers. If you want to walk in the parade, we suggest arriving no later than 11:45.
🏳️‍🌈 What should I wear?
Whatever you like! It’s a community event, so keep it PG, but we welcome whatever you feel comfortable in.
🏳️‍🌈 I don’t want to walk in the parade, but want to support, what should I do?
We’d love to see you line the streets, or decorate your house/garden/fence along the route. Feel free to wave flags/signs - whatever you feel comfortable with!
🏳️‍🌈 I don’t agree with a pride march, what should I do?
We ask that you simply don’t attend. There’ll be some music going past some houses, but we think we’ve picked a fairly sensible time of day where it won’t be too disruptive, and we’ll post the parade route well in advance of the event. South Wairarapa has one of the largest populations of queer people in NZ, so if you’re not down to show some love to our LGBTQ+ community, please be respectful/avoid etc.
🏳️‍🌈 Can I make signs?
Yes! We’d really love that. We’ll be having a couple of sign making workshops in the lead up to the event, so check the pages for details.
🏳️‍🌈 I’m not from Featherston/South Wairarapa. Can I attend/March/spectate?
Totally! The more the merrier!
🏳️‍🌈 Can I throw things like confetti/badges/sweets?
We’d really love to keep the street as clean as possible, so would prefer if you could hand things out directly rather than throw a lot of confetti or sweets etc. Please be mindful of any litter caused by costumes/props, too!
