About the Event:
John Jorgenson is one of the world’s foremost ambassadors of Gypsy jazz, bringing the spirit of Django Reinhardt to audiences with extraordinary authenticity, virtuosity, and passion. Since discovering Django’s music in 1979, Jorgenson has immersed himself in the language and tradition of Gypsy jazz, developing a distinctive voice that honours its roots while expanding its possibilities.
Through the acclaimed John Jorgenson Quintet, he has become a leading interpreter of the genre, performing Django classics, French musette, and original compositions inspired by the Manouche tradition. His artistry has taken him to the heart of Gypsy jazz history, including headlining the prestigious Django Reinhardt Jazz Festival in Samois-sur-Seine, France—the town where Django lived and where the world’s most celebrated Gypsy jazz festival is held. He also portrayed Django Reinhardt in the film Head In The Clouds, further reflecting his deep connection to the legendary guitarist’s legacy.
Jorgenson has shared the stage with many of the greatest names in Gypsy jazz, including Bireli Lagrene and Stochelo Rosenberg, while earning recognition as one of the genre’s most accomplished and respected guitarists. His dazzling technique, lyrical improvisation, and deep respect for tradition have made him a favourite among players and audiences worldwide.
Beyond Gypsy jazz, Jorgenson’s remarkable versatility has defined a career spanning country, rock, bluegrass, classical, and pop music. As a founding member of the Desert Rose Band, he earned three consecutive Academy of Country Music Guitarist of the Year awards, and as a member of The Hellecasters helped redefine the possibilities of instrumental guitar music. He toured and recorded with Elton John from 1994 to 2000 and has collaborated with artists including Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Sting, Earl Scruggs and Barbra Streisand.
A Grammy Award winner and multi-instrumentalist, Jorgenson brings a rare combination of technical brilliance, musical curiosity, and heartfelt connection to every performance. Through concerts, recordings, festivals, and education, he continues to celebrate Django Reinhardt’s legacy while keeping Gypsy jazz a vibrant and evolving art form for new generations.
