In 1905, the Laurel Sanitarium stood here—a place built for healing, but defined by isolation. Patients suffering from tuberculosis and other chronic illnesses were brought here, often separated from the world they once knew. Some came with hope.Many never left.
What lingers behind is more than memory. Investigators believe the sorrow, the fear, the final moments… may have imprinted themselves into the land itself.
Decades later, the property became the Laurel Shopping Center—forever marked in 1972 when presidential candidate George Wallace was shot during a campaign stop. A moment of sudden violence that stunned the nation.
Tragedy layered upon tragedy. Emotion layered upon emotion.
Today, Laurel’s House of Horror occupies an old cinema within that same location. What was once a place of escape and entertainment has become something else entirely… Something much much darker.
