Our 16-hour ITC Outdoor First Aid course has been running on Dartmoor since 2010. It’s built for people who work in remote Outdoor settings

Outdoor First Aid, 2 Day Course


This 16 hour Outdoor First Aid Devon training covers practical skills needed by those working in Remote, Wilderness and Mountain & Outdoor situations providing the confidence and knowledge to deal with comprehensive life-saving first aid emergencies in the outdoor environment.

It is recognised by most Outdoor National Governing Bodies Instructor Awards including Canoeing & Kayaking (BCU) and Mountaineering & Rock Climbing (MLTUK), as well as being of interest to Forestry Workers, Environmentalists and those undertaking Field Studies, to mention a few.

It is also suitable for Forest School and the course content and context is totally integrated with the Forest School ethos and rationale; First Aid 4 Life are on the National Register of Forest School First Aid Trainers.

Needless to say Outdoor First Aid Devon training takes place on beautiful Dartmoor in Devon, however we can provide it at a venue convenient for you if required, please contact us via our Contact page.


Content – Outdoor First Aid
  • Being Safe – best practise including prevention of cross-infection.
  • Vital Signs – temperature, colour, pulse, breathing, level of consciousness.
  • Incident Handling – a systematic approach to problem solving & decision making.
  • Unconsciousness – managing the unconscious casualty to ensure a safe airway.
  • CPR/AED & Choking – dealing with the non breathing casualty including drowning.
  • Wounds & Bleeding – dealing with external & internal bleeding and shock.
  • Major Injuries – treating head, spine, chest, abdomen, pelvis, leg & arm injuries.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries – to muscles & joints including dislocations.
  • Monitoring – Casualty Cards & monitoring plus hand over to rescue services.
  • Remote Issues – improvisation techniques when you have nothing else available!
  • Cold and Heat – dealing with hypothermia, hyperthermia and burns.
  • Medical Emergencies – angina, heart attack, stroke, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, bites, stings and anaphylaxis.
  • First Aid Regulations – some awareness including first aid kits.

Certification – Outdoor First Aid

This training provides an ITC Certificate in Outdoor First Aid and is a regulated qualification at SCQF Level 6.


Requalification

Certificates are valid for three years following which candidates undertake a further 2 days training (16+ hour) Outdoor First Aid.

Info: Vital Signs
Simple checks to build a quick picture of the casualty.

Temperature and overall appearance.

Skin colour.

Pulse.

Breathing rate and quality.

Level of consciousness.

The Incident Procedure
A structured approach to assessing what’s happened and what needs doing.

Initial survey and general observations.

Prioritising hazards.

Deciding on the next steps.

Calling for help when needed.

Unconscious Casualties
Managing someone who is unresponsive but breathing.

Airway checks.

Safe positioning.

Ongoing monitoring.

Recovery Position/Safe Airway
Used when the airway must be kept clear in a breathing casualty.

Rolling the casualty safely.

Positioning for drainage and airway protection.

Regular reassessment.

CPR & AED
For a casualty who is unresponsive and not breathing normally.

Confirming unresponsiveness.

Chest compressions and rescue breaths, including pauses and rhythm.

Using an AED confidently.

Adjustments for situations such as drowning.

Info: Soft Tissue & Medical Issues
Sprains, strains, simple dislocations, plus key medical problems such as chest pain, stroke, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and allergic reactions.

Cold, Heat & Burns
Hypothermia, heat illness and basic burn care, with simple actions suited to outdoor conditions.

Monitoring & Handover
Using brief notes or casualty cards, watching for changes and passing clear info to rescue teams.

Remote Care & Improvisation
Working with limited kit, using clothing or natural materials for protection, support and shelter.

First Aid Regulations
Basic awareness and simple kit expectations.

Dartmoor Scenario
Outdoor assessment, managing environment, improvising support, recording findings and planning rescue.
