About this Event
In honor of Earth Day, Global Education Center presents a special afternoon of poetry, film, dialogue, and community.
Opening Performance — 4:00 PM
Beloved poet Thandiwe Shiphrah shares an excerpt from "The Hear(th) Project," an inspiring performance of jazz poems and rhythmic reflections celebrating the natural world and the bonds of community.
Film Screening — 4:30 PM
"Our Movement Starts Here," directed by John Rash and Melanie Ho, tells the story of a rural, predominantly Black community in Warren County, North Carolina that mobilized against the state's plan to construct a toxic PCB landfill near their homes in 1982. Their fight became the first to name environmental racism and environmental justice, bringing civil rights activists and environmentalists together for the first time. Forty years later, the citizens of Warren County continue to inspire a new generation of activists pushing for equity in the face of climate change and environmental injustice.
The film has been nominated for a 2026 Southeast Regional Emmy Award by the SE Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).
Post-Film Discussion + Community Meal — 5:55 PM
Filmmaker John Rash joins us for a conversation about the film, followed by a community meal.
