Synopsis:
Our Kind is a gripping short film that unfolds inside a hospital waiting room, where three lives unexpectedly intersect. David DuPois, a gifted young artist preparing to study in Paris, rushes to the hospital after his grandmother Cicely suffers a fall. Cicely, a retired performer who once graced the stage with legends, masks her frailty with wit, wisdom, and an unwavering elegance.

In the same waiting room sits Paul McGill, a bitter older white man whose sharp tongue reveals deep-seated racism and loneliness. When Paul collapses, he learns he has lupus nephritis — a disease disproportionately affecting communities of color. Facing his mortality, Paul is forced to reckon with his prejudices and isolation.

As the night unfolds, Cicely offers Paul compassion instead of judgment, while David quietly embodies her lessons of empathy. When Paul’s life depends on a rare kidney match, David makes a selfless choice that bridges the gap between generations, race, and pain.

Through moments of tension, humor, and profound grace, Our Kind explores themes of identity, family, prejudice, forgiveness, and the redemptive power of human connection. It asks: in a country fractured by divisions, can compassion still heal us?
