This two-day on-line institute provides an overview of best practices in teaching and leading for biliteracy.About this Event
You are invited to participate in the Teaching for Biliteracy Two-Day Institute, an online institute including both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (pre-recorded) elements. The institute will feature:
- Overview of the strategic use of Spanish (or other non-English language) and English in teaching for biliteracy in transitional bilingual programs, dual language programs, and one-way and two-way immersion programs
- Best practices in teaching Spanish (or other non-English language) and English literacy
- Strategies that support the Bridge between languages
- Bilingual unit framework for developing and delivering standards-based biliteracy units of instruction that integrate the teaching of language and content
- Biliteracy schedules, language and content allocation plans, biliteracy curriculum maps, and other programmatic structures to support biliteracy instruction
Schedule for the on-line event:
- A few days before the event, we will send you several links to watch pre-recorded webinars (asynchronous sessions) and to join live zoom professional development sessions (synchronous sessions)
- There will be specific webinars to view in anticipation of the live professional development each day.
- Watching the webinars will require 1-2 hours per day.
- Each day, there will be a live zoom professional development session (synchronous sessions) where we will engage in highly interactive presentations, activities, and small group discussions focused on best practices in teaching and programing for biliteracy. These highly engaging afternoon sessions will take place from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. CENTRAL TIME. These sessions will not be recorded.
- Because these sessions will take place via Zoom, each participant will need to be on their own device, separate from other participants.
Technical Requirements for the on-line event: In order to participate effectively in the on-line professional development, it is important that each participant have:
- Their own laptop or desktop computer - phones and tablets might work but not always with complete interactive capability. Each participant should be on their own device.
- Webcam (computer camera) - facilitates interaction during the synchronous (live) sessions. Because we will be engaging in small group discussions and other interactive activities, participants are required to have their videos on during the live zoom professional development sessions in the afternoon. This is so that we can see each other as we engage in discussion and activities.
- Browser - it is best to use the newest version available of your preferred browser.
- Wired connection (recommended) or robust wireless - particularly needed during synchronous sessions.
- Headset with microphone or earbuds with your computer's built-in mic are recommended, but not necessary. We have found that this helps keep down feedback and background noise from interrupting the institute.
S pace is limited, so register soon!
