Our Fashion in Film Series continues this fall with a Mod-Era film from VOGUE Photographer William Klein! ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ง๐ถ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฒ๐๐ to the 7pm show of WHO ARE YOU POLLY MAGOO? at amblertheater.org/fashion๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ฒ: In this satire of the shallow world of the Parisian haute couture industry of the โ60s. Real-life model Dorothy McGowan stars in her only onscreen role as the enigmatic Polly Maggoo, the worldโs most famous celebrity. A French camera crew follows Polly as she drifts between fashion shows and photoshoots in an attempt to understand the publicโs fascination with her looks. Showcasing stunning black and white cinematography and bold Mod era fashions, this experimental mockumentary is a must-see for any fashion enthusiast. Also featuring Philadelphia native Grayson Hall, Jean Rochefort, Sami Frey, and a brief appearance from Delphine Seyrig. In French w/ subtitles.
๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ผ๐ป: WHO ARE YOU, POLLY MAGGOO has both feet rooted in the ground of the โ60s fashion world. Director William Klein got his start as a photographer at American VOGUE in the 1950s, witnessing the evolution in fashion design from the new look through the mod-era. His sharp eye, alongside the designing talents of his wife, costume designer, and model Janine Klein, showcases the wildest looks of the swinginโ sixties, featuring countless bold monochromatic designs made from both conventional and unconventional materials in the film. This is a movie where the looks are more important than the plot; the thick eyelashes, over-the-top hairstyles, and avante-garde dresses transform this mockumentary into a captivating runway show. POLLY MAGGOO has influenced countless designers, most notably Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gaultier, who opened his final Runway Show in January 2020 with a clip from the film. It also features cameos from immortal fashion photographers Jeanloup Sieff, Richard Avedon, and Louis Faurer.

๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ From Marilyn's iconic white halter dress to Brando's leather jacket, it's no secret that some costumes make a lasting impression both in a viewerโs mind and in their closet. Throughout the year we will delve into cinemaโs greatest style hits and explore how clothing and fashion can be woven together to propel a filmโs story. Not only will we highlight the work of iconic designers like Edith Head and Coco Chanel, but we will also exhibit films where the costumes are given a starring role.
