In 1916, an English composer named Gustav Holst wrote The Planets. He gave each planet its own personality: Mars is angry and warlike, Venus is calm and peaceful, Jupiter is pure joy. When John Williams needed music for the villains of Star Wars in 1977, he reached for that same sound.
