October Native Art Market: Featuring Janice Jainga-Lonergan
Join Native Action Network on Friday, October 9, from 6 to 9 PM for our monthly Native Art Market, held during Belltown Art Walk. It's an evening of Indigenous art, culture and community at our office, 55 Bell Street, Suite 201, with Native-owned small businesses and light refreshments.
Featured Artist: Ksgooga Gwisgwaasgm Gyemk (Janice Jainga-Lonergan)
Ts'msyen Lakgibou (Tsimshian Wolf Clan)
Janice is a traditional and contemporary Tsimshian weaver and artist. She is honored to carry on the traditions of her ancestors, and her art helps revive a culture that was once close to being lost. Her work includes cedar bark weaving, Raven's Tail and Chilkat weaving, copper metalwork and contemporary pieces in cedar, metal and beadwork. Her regalia includes button robes, tunics, aprons, woven cedar hats, hayetsk (copper shields), headbands, vests and moccasins.
Janice also teaches people how to gather plant materials and prepare them for weaving, medicine and food. She has created artwork that raises awareness of Indigenous justice issues, including Walking With Our Sisters, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People (MMIW/P), and the history of residential boarding schools. As an urban Indigenous relative, she mentors Native youth and community members and shares knowledge on urban gardens, food sources and subsistence, so that culture and community can grow stronger together.
Special Guest Artist: Dorothy Grant, Haida Master Fashion Designer
Dorothy Grant is a Kaigani Haida artist of the Raven Clan, from the Brown Bear House of Howkan. She was born in Hydaburg, Alaska, and has been designing for more than 40 years. Inspired by her mentors, Haida elder Florence Edenshaw Davidson and master artist Bill Reid, she began bringing Haida formline art to clothing in the 1980s and debuted her first collection in 1989. She pioneered what is now known as Haida Couture, or “Feastwear”: garments that bring ancestral stories and ceremonial design into contemporary fashion.
Dorothy is a Member of the Order of Canada and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and a recipient of the National Aboriginal Achievement Award. Her work is held in museum collections across Canada, the U.S. and the U.K., including in Seattle. She will be selling a selection of her pieces. It's a rare chance to see and take home her work in person.
Special Guest Artist: Linley B. Logan (Seneca)
Linley B. Logan is a multidisciplinary artist from the Tonawanda Seneca Nation who has lived and worked in the Salish Sea region for more than two decades. His work in printmaking, painting, traditional and contemporary jewelry, clay and sculpture explores Indigenous worldview and cultural identity. He studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Institute of American Indian Arts, and he has exhibited internationally for more than 40 years.
Linley has spent his career in Indigenous arts program management. He has curated contemporary Native art exhibitions, presented at International Indigenous Visual Arts Gatherings and served as a Washington State Arts Commissioner. In his words, he “lives a life of art in the art of life.”
