Observational Drawing in Still Life 

With Phuong Nguyen in the Living Lab 

Thursday July 18, 6 – 8:00 pm 

 
This fundamental drawing class will focus on the still life.  Participants will be invited to set up a still life as a group and learn observational drawing skills to translate the set-up into drawing.  Measuring with a pencil, observing forms, shadows, and texture, and learning about using basic materials like willow charcoal and graphite pencils are all a part of this workshop. No experience necessary. Materials will be provided.   

What does this have to do with the Living Lab? 

In exchange for the class, we ask participants help us build the Living Lab space by bringing an object for the growing collection in Jose’s installation, The place as an object and the object as a place. 

What objects do you want? 

We are slowing build a cabinet of curiosities in the Lakeshore Gallery space. It can be anything that sparks wonder, or that is an everyday item that holds a deep sense of appreciation. For example, maybe you choose to go in a food related direction like a bowl, cup, glass, mug, can, carton, or box, or in a whimsical direction and donate a gem, shell, stone, or plastic toy.  Really there are no bad ideas or objects.

Phuong has asked that you imagine what repair looks like when choosing your object.  

Do you get your objects back? 

This is an experiment. We cannot guarantee that the objects in the Living Lab will find its way back to you or guests. So, make sure that it is not a valuable object (sentimental or expensive) that you would not mind parting with or donating at the end of the experiment. 

Phuong Nguyen is a Tkaronto (Toronto)-based visual artist working in representational oil painting and experimental weaving.  Nguyen uses these mediums to explore themes of self-discovery through self-tokenism and fantasy by referencing the aesthetics and the history of Chinoiserie as well as their connection to South East Asian femininity and Ornamentalism. Nguyen has exhibited in the Aurora Cultural Centre, Stewart Hall Art Gallery, TAP Artspace, Duran Mashaal Gallery, Art Galleries of Cambridge and holds a BFA from OCAD University (2014). https://www.phuongnguyen.ca
