More than 42,000 dogs and over 106,000 monkeys are being tested on and held in U.S. laboratories each year, along with millions of other animals. The film takes audiences inside leading research institutions, including Harvard and Stanford, where scientists are developing innovative human-based technologies that many believe are reshaping how medicines are discovered, tested and approved. Through the voices of researchers, scientists, policymakers including people from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Senator Cory Booker and Senator Rand Paul, a former primate lab veterinarian, a woman who adopted a former laboratory dog, and the caretakers at animal sanctuaries for former research animals, “The New Gold Standard” explores a pivotal moment in biomedical research, and the people helping drive that change today
