About this Event

About the course

I am honored to offer NVC Basics again for its second run and first publicly open cohort! Over the course of three Sundays in October (Oct 4th, 11th, 18th) from 5–6:15pm PST, we will learn a handful of new skills to deeply connect with our bodies. Each session will include a sequence of gentle movement, meditation, theory, and practice. This is primarily a skills-based somatics course that consists of gentle healing and resourcing practices - we won't be doing any major intensity work in this group. This group is geared towards beginners in somatics, and will be enriching to those with an established somatics or NVC practice. The group will be an intimate cohort of 10 or fewer folks. In addition to new curriculum each week and printed handouts, a light snack and herbal tea will be offered before each session. Please plan to arrive 15 mins early to settle into and familiarize yourself with the space.

What is NVC?

Nonviolent Communication, or NVC, is a somatic communication modality created by Marshall Rosenberg. This modality offers a number of relational frameworks that support participants to develop a somatic awareness of their body, connect deeply with their feelings and needs, and the feelings and needs of others (especially during times of conflict). In this way, we can begin to heal and reconnect with our bodies, foster more empathy towards ourselves and each other, and learn to try and take blame out of the equation to be in more harmonious and collaborative relationships.

Luchia's NVC experience

I have been practicing Nonviolent Communication since I first learned about it in 2019 from the workbook "Decolonizing Non-violent Communication" by Meenadchi, who brings a trauma-informed and Decolonial perspective to the modality. I studied with Meenadchi in 2021 and 2022 in her DNVC in the Context of White Supremacy course, and her Reflective Listening skill-building series. I have since practiced in many NVC groups over the years, and I have an established bi-weekly NVC practice of five years with my dear friend and colleague, Sharon Vincuilla. I have accumulated hundreds of hours of experience with NVC personally and in collaborative practice.

Lineage acknowledgment

This course draws from Marshall Rosenberg's NVC modality and frameworks, and Meenadchi's somatic and trauma-informed teachings, and her teachers' Decolonial teachings. This course also introduces participants to the Generative Somatics Centering practice, which is adapted from the teachings of Aikido (a Japanese martial art). I first learned Centering from somatics practitioner Hanna-Harris-Sutro, and then again from Ream, a Generative Somatics-trained practitioner. This course takes place in Pasadena, CA on the current and ancestral homelands of the Tongva. Please note that I do not have a formal affiliation with Generative Somatics, or with the Center for Nonviolent Communication.

Financial transparency

125 dollars is the full cost of this course. Paying this amount pays me for facilitation and ten-plus hours of behind-the-scenes admin work, and pays for studio rental and other related expenses. If you are in need of a scholarship to attend this course, please email me at [email protected] asking for one and I will give you a discount code to use at checkout. I can offer a space for as low as 75 dollars. Please only ask if you truly need one. I also have a scholarship spot for a fellow trans woman in need at 25 dollars, and a no-cost reparations spot for a Black person in need (if this is either of you, please also email me to inquire). These specific spots are offered in recognition that these identities and experiences are so often underrepresented in somatics spaces. A percentage of revenue from this course will be donated to the Tongva Taraxat Paxaavxa Conservancy in support of their vision and mission of a future towards a Tongva-led land stewardship of Tovaangar (LA). I also direct ten percent of my income as reparations to support the healing and survival of Black trans folks in Los Angeles.
