Join us at the 125th Street Library for monthly short film series on a different theme presented on 16mm projection.
About this Event

Come celebrate Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month with an afternoon of rarely screened short films at the 125th Street Library. Enjoy the rhythms of Willie Colón, do a shift at a fish market with a grade-schooler, and learn about getting your building organized against your landlord. All films will be projected in 16mm. A short discussion will follow the screenings. Film descriptions located below.

The Heart of Loisaida (1979) "Shows efforts on New York's Lower East Side to revive abandoned buildings through the work and persistence of the local, predominantly Latino residents." [dir. Bienvenida Matias & Marci Reaven] Runtime: 30m.

A Park on Our Block (1969) "Documents an experimental project in Spanish Harlem in New York City in which organizations and individuals worked with the city to transform a garbage dump into a park. Former New York City Parks Commissioner August Heckscher is interviewed and discusses the problems involved and the knowledge gained from the project." [dir. Peter Robinson] Runtime: 22m.

Miguel: Up from Puerto Rico (1970) "The story of a young Puerto Rican boy living in New York City. When he loses the dollar with which he was to buy a fish for his father's birthday dinner, he uses his bilingualism to good advantage." [dir. Bert Salzman] Runtime: 15m.

El Baquine de Angelitos Negros (1977) “Originally aired on the WNET show Realidades, a balletic interpretation of a woman's grief over the death of her son using traditional Puerto Rican dance and music. Focuses on the ritual "baquine," a festival of dance which celebrates the passage of the child's soul to heaven where it is welcomed by God and transformed into an angel.
