We hope many of the people participating in the book will be able to join and pick up their free copies. For everyone else, Jan de Jong from will have a book table, where copies can be bought with a special launch discount.
In addition to a short introduction to the book, we present two talks: one by artist and designer Lotte Lara Schröder about her process of designing the Plural book series for Valiz. The other talk is by designer and letterer Henk van het Nederend from Moker Ontwerp, who has designed many book and magazine covers using his lettering skills.

Lotte Lara Schröder is a graphic designer born and based in Amsterdam, that explores her own visual language(s) within her design projects. Her interests in ecological and natural phenomena inform her more free work consists of drawings, paintings, and collages, often combined with sound or objects. Describing her works as ‘the creating of manuals for everday life’ albeit their lack of functionality.
Henk van het Nederend is a graphic designer and letterer based in Amsterdam. Together with three partners, he forms the Amsterdam design agency Moker Ontwerp, founded in 2008. The four founders met while studying Illustrative Design at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). Moker Ontwerp’s work is characterized by craftsmanship and a distinctly manual approach, applied in a variety of techniques and styles. Over the years, Henk has increasingly focused on communicating ideas as visually and expressively as possible through letters as the primary starting point, whether it is for book covers, magazines or logos. His work has been included in various (inter)national publications and exhibitions.

For Lotte, design projects are most fun when being involved from the beginning. Helping to develop an editorial structure and voice for the project, and not only creating the overall book and cover design. Through presenting the Plural series for Valiz and She Saw, I Saw, a recent project together with artist Marieke Zwart, she will showcase the wide scope of what her graphic design practice entails.
During his lecture, Henk will present a selection of projects in which custom-made typography and hand lettering form the foundation. The emphasis is on book covers, but other applications and personal work are also discussed. The common thread throughout his presentation is the growing fascination with calligraphy/handwriting and the ongoing search for ways to apply this in a contemporary way within contemporary design.
