Don't miss this exclusive Artist/Curator Talk with acclaimed artist Michael Massie and guest curator Alysa Procida. Discover the stories exhibited in now and then, celebrating Massie's remarkable career through an extraordinary collection of teapots, previously unexhibited and new works. Together, they will explore the joy, humour, and experimentation that define Massie's practice, and discuss how his exceptional craftsmanship weaves together Inuit design traditions, community, and political commentary while continually challenging expectations of contemporary Inuit art.

About the Artist

Michael Massie was born in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and currently resides in Kippens, NL. His artwork reflects his mixed Inuit and Scottish heritage, such as his iconic ulu teapot works. He has been working in sculpture, painting, and drawing for over thirty years and has achieved artistic acclaim in Canada and internationally. His work sits in collections including the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Heard Museum, Royal Ontario Museum, National Gallery of Canada, The Rooms, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Montreal Museum of Fine Art, and the YVR Vancouver Airport Collection. He has been shortlisted twice for the Prix Saidye-Bronfman, an honorary distinction for a Canadian craftsperson who demonstrates excellence in fine crafts. He was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2011 and inducted into the Order of Canada in 2017. Massie received an honorary doctorate from OCAD University in 2024.

About the Guest Curator

Alysa Procida is an arts administrator, curator, and consultant who is passionate about connecting artists with audiences across the world. She is the 2026 International Liaison for the Arctic Arts Summit Secretariat, having previously co-organized the 2022 Arctic Arts Summit in Whitehorse, YK. Previously, she was the Executive Director of the Inuit Art Foundation (IAF) and Publisher of the Inuit Art Quarterly (IAQ), Chair of the Magazines Canada Board of Directors, and a mentor on the Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership: The Pilimmaksarniq / Pijariuqsarniq Project. As Publisher of the IAQ, Alysa oversaw a full redesign of the magazine in conjunction with the IAF’s 30th anniversary in 2017 and the magazine’s first National Magazine Award in 2018. In 2019, she was shortlisted for Publisher Grand Prix at the National Magazine Awards, and in 2021 the IAQ was awarded Best Arts and Literary Magazine and winner of the Magazine Grand Prix.
