Welcome to an engaging tune workshop with Swedish folk trio Marine/Simonson/Wiskari as they are on tour in Aotearoa!Are you curious about traditional music from the Nordic countries? Ready to dive into what gives this music its distinctive groove and character?
Then this workshop is for you!
This is a unique opportunity to learn from three highly experienced and established musicians and educators, all specialising in Nordic traditional music.
Who is it for?
The workshop is open to instrumentalists of all ages. A few years of experience on your instrument will help you get the most out of the session.
What will we work on?
- Traditional Nordic melodies
- Shaping and phrasing tunes
- Groove and rhythmic feel
- Adding second voices and harmonies
Learning will be by ear, with sheet music provided afterwards.

About the musicians:
Mia Marine is an internationally renowned and highly respected musician and educator within the Scandinavian folk music scene. As a composer and arranger, she writes music both for her own projects and for the many educational settings she is involved in. Mia tours worldwide with several bands and solo projects. In addition to her performing career, Mia teaches at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg and runs the popular online learning platform, the Groovy Fiddle Academy.
Jonas Simonson is one of Sweden’s most established and innovative flute players within folk and world music. Since the mid-1980s he has travelled the globe with his music. As an artist he has had a great impact on the innovative Swedish folk music scene and is featured on numerous albums with his intense, rhythmical and personal style of playing. Jonas regularly composes music for his groups and projects and has worked as a theatre musician and as a producer alongside his position as a professor in musical performance at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg.
Hanna Wiskari is a musician and educator seen and heard with various bands and projects. With the soprano saxophone as her main instrument and Nordic folk music as a basis, Hanna has spent many years developing her sound and personal style, which has been heard in many projects in Scandinavia and New Zealand. During the past 15 years Hanna has worked as an Artistic Mentor for Ethno, an international music project for young musicians from all over the world. When relocating to Aotearoa New Zealand in 2016, she decided to start an Ethno there, and is one of the founders and main organisers of Ethno New Zealand as well as numerous other intercultural initiatives.
