About this Event

Location: A metro-accessible venue in downtown DC (to be specified after registration)

This interactive workshop will cover foundational ideas and practices of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) applied to social change contexts such as mission-driven organizations, activism or advocacy campaigns, movements, and coalitions.NVC is an approach to understanding internal and interpersonal dynamics.

We believe that when integrated with awareness of historical, socio-political, and material contexts, NVC increases the potential for connection, creativity, and collaboration across differences, within and between groups. Our aim is for participants to connect with their capacity to communicate and collaborate effectively, strengthen relevant relationships, build resilience and self-compassion, transform conflicts, and negotiate better outcomes even across power differences.

We will use elicitive methods such as group discussions, story telling, and role playing around familiar scenarios to increase integration of ideas and practices. We welcome those new to NVC, as well as those who want a refresher or have an interest in the social change angle this workshop will take. Following the workshop, we may host a discussion and networking hour for participants with catered dinner for purchase, pending interest. The trainers include Tarek Maassarani, JD, a certified trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication and Georgetown professor with a long history in peace and justice work locallly and around the world, and Ryan McAllister, co-founder of NotJustSkin.org and WalkingSeed.org with deep experience in intentional community living and individual/organizational support. Together, Ryan and Tarek have spent over 40 years at the intersection Nonviolent Communication and social change, with forays into peace education, conflict resolution, mediation, mindfulness, peer-counseling, and parenting. And we are always learning more!
Please register here. For those that register, you can expect the exact location, a container setting guidance, and further workshop details to be shared by December 1.Sliding scale donation $0-60, depending on what you can afford and what you are happy to give, payable by cash, check, or various digital platforms before or after the workshop. Please contact [email protected], specifying "Dec 6 NVC workshop" in the subject line with any questions or comments.
