Pet Portrait Pencil Sketching Intermediate

Description:

Capture the personality and charm of your beloved pets in this fun and exploratory pencil sketching course. Through guided exercises and demonstrations, you’ll learn how to observe your pet more closely and translate their unique features onto paper with confidence and character.

Although the course focuses on drawing pets such as dogs, cats, and other furry companions, the skills learned are far from limited to animal subjects. Observation, proportion, construction, shading, texture rendering, and form-building are fundamental drawing skills that can be applied to people, flowers, food, landscapes and many other artistic pursuits.

This course aims to build a strong foundation in pencil sketching and provide participants with versatile skills that can support a lifelong creative journey.

What You Will Learn

Observation and Visual Analysis: Learn how artists observe shapes, forms, proportions, and details that are often overlooked in everyday viewing.

Proportions and Measurement: Develop techniques for accurately placing facial features and judging the size and relationships between different parts of the animal.

Constructing Organic Forms: Learn how to simplify complex animal subjects into manageable shapes and forms before refining them into realistic drawings.

Light, Shadow, and Tonal Values: Use shading techniques to create depth, volume, and three-dimensional form.

Pencil Handling and Mark-Making: Explore different pencil strokes, pressure control, layering, blending, and erasing techniques to achieve a variety of effects.

Drawing Fur and Texture: Study fur direction, length, density, and texture, and learn how to convincingly render different coats ranging from short-haired cats to fluffy dogs and small furry animals.

Capturing Expression and Character: Learn how subtle details in the eyes, ears, posture, and facial features contribute to a pet's unique personality.

Understanding Organic vs Geometric Forms: Compare the flowing, irregular shapes found in animals with the structured and predictable forms of man-made objects. This helps strengthen observation skills and improves the ability to draw a wide variety of

subjects.

NOTE: Students should already possess prior pencil sketching experience
