About this Event
This event gathers city leaders, government representatives and a global community of nighttime experts to co-create knowledge and prototype innovative action models. Despite the growing movement of nighttime governance, scholarship, and advocacy, cities often overlook the value of nighttime culture.
Fishbowl 1: Urban Spaces and Social Cohesion – Fostering Healthy Urban Societies
Time: 6:45-7:30pm
Description: This fishbowl will explore how the design of urban spaces, particularly at night, can enhance social cohesion and support a healthy discourse in urban societies. By rethinking the role of nighttime spaces, we can create environments that foster community well-being and inclusivity, while addressing the challenges of safety, sleep, and equitable access to housing. The discussion will focus on how human settlements and urban design influence public engagement, trust, and social justice.

- Juma Assiago (UN-Habitat) – Global Specialist - Human Settlements
- Azza Sirry professor of urban planning at HBRC Housing and building national research center (requested)
- Nada Alhelabi (MDLBEAST Foundation) – Advocates for the power of music to promote inclusivity and well-being in urban settings, bridging music and urban transformation.
- Ricardo Rio (Mayor of Braga, Portugal) – Combines political leadership with urban development strategies that enhance public space and cultural vibrancy in cities.
- Sara Hoeflich (UCLG) – Expertise in establishing learning networks and peer learning activities makes her well-suited to discuss how local governments can collaborate to improve social cohesion and safety in nighttime environments.
