Newborn Feeding Foundations: Breastfeeding in the First Month
About this Event
The first month of breastfeeding is one of the steepest learning curves you'll ever experience—and almost no one tells you what to actually expect. Is it supposed to hurt? Is my baby getting enough? Why are they on the breast again? When should I worry?
In this class, we'll walk through what those first four weeks really look like, so you can tell the difference between the hard-but-normal and the this-needs-attention.
You'll learn from both sides of the feeding picture. I'm Dr. Irissa Rosario MD, a board-certified pediatrician with 15 years caring for newborns and their families. I'm joined by Giovana Rorato, IBCLC and owner of Lactation Station, who brings deep, hands-on expertise in the mechanics and day-to-day reality of feeding. Together we cover what most classes don't: the medical and the lactation side, in one place.
We'll cover:
- What's normal — feeding frequency and cluster feeding, what a good latch feels like, normal weight changes in the early days, diaper output as your daily report card, and how your milk supply actually establishes itself.
- What's not — the signs that a latch needs adjusting, when nipple pain has crossed from "adjusting" to "something's wrong," signs of poor milk transfer, and red flags for dehydration or jaundice you shouldn't wait on.
- When to get help — who to call and how quickly, the difference between a lactation question and a medical one, and how to advocate for yourself when something feels off.
This is a hands-on class. You'll get to practice feeding positions, see and handle different types of breast pumps, and explore the breastfeeding supplies that are worth your money—so you leave knowing what actually works for you!
You'll leave knowing what to expect, what to watch for, and the confidence to trust yourself in those early weeks—plus plenty of space for your questions. Snacks and tea will be provided, so come settle in and stay a while.
Whether you're expecting your first baby or already in the thick of it, you're welcome here.
