NEW in Toronto: The Science of Brain Health
About this Event
On October 7th, we present : "The Science of Brains Health" by Prof. Lauren Sergio.
We tend to think of thinking and moving as separate activities. But some of the most important things we do every day—driving, navigating a busy street, reaching for an object, using a computer—require our brains to think and move at the same time.
This lecture explores cognitive-motor integration: how the brain combines what we see, what we think, and how we move to navigate the world around us. Dr. Lauren Sergio will share research on eye-hand coordination and reveal how these abilities can change with concussion, dementia, aging, and other changes in brain health.
But this isn't just a story about what can go wrong. Dr. Sergio will also explore how rule-based visuomotor training can help rehabilitate disrupted brain networks and potentially preserve healthy cognitive-motor performance.
From the deceptively simple act of moving a computer mouse to the complex movements that make everyday life possible, you'll discover how closely thinking and moving are connected—and how we might use that connection to better understand, assess, and support brain health.
💡 About the incredible Dr. Lauren Sergio
Dr. Lauren Sergio is a Professor and York Research Chair in Brain Health and Gender in Action at York University’s School of Kinesiology and Health Science. She earned her PhD in movement neuroscience from McGill University and completed postdoctoral studies in neurophysiology at the Université de Montréal.
Her research examines how age, sex, gender, neurological disease, head injury, and experience affect the brain’s control of complex movement, using behavioural and brain-imaging techniques. She is also a member of the York University Sport Medicine team and an Affiliate Scientist at KITE Research at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute.
