This is part 1 of a 3-part technical sewing course. It is entry level and designed for people who want to learn basic sewing terminology, technique, tool fundamentals, fabric cutting and pattern reading. By the end of this course, you will have the skills to create garments based on shop bought patterns.It is ideal for people who have never sewed or who are beginner sewers looking to improve their skills. The practical elements of this course are interwoven with theory and handy hints, meaning that there is something for everybody.
This 12-week interactive course combines theory and practice, and will cover:
● Sewing machine fundamentals.
● Essential sewing tools.
● Stitching varieties.
● Fabric types and behaviours.
● Taking body measurements.
● Dressmaking seams and finishes: plain, top-stitched, French, lapped.
● Basic zip insertion: lapped, concealed/invisible, exposed.
● Making and attaching patch pockets.
● Inserting in-seam pockets.
● Sewing single and double darts.
● Gathering.
● Knife pleating.
● Sewing buttonholes by machine.
● Sewing buttons by machine.
● Attaching fasteners.
● Inserting facings: standard and bias.
● Using interfacing.
● Under-stitching technique.
● Hemming: standard double fold, invisible and rolled.
● Pattern reading, pattern marking, pattern cutting.
● Making and attaching a flat collar.
● Inserting a basic sleeve: flat insertion and pre-seamed.

● Sewing machine (essential)
● Snippers or embroidery scissors
● Seam ripper
● Pins and pin cushion
● Bobbins
● Thread (spooled)
● Cutting scissors
● Tape measure
● Pencil and notepad
● Ruler
