The New Bern York Rite Spring Festival
In medieval times, springtime in villages was a season for renewal, joy and connection with the community. With the York Rite Spring Festival, New Bern will recreate that excitement. The New Bern York Rite Spring Festival is a celebration of history, faith and Freemasonry, where tradition and modernity blend into a wonderful mix of history and community.
In medieval England, springtime festivals like Whitsun (Pentecost) and Hocktide were important events in the lives of ordinary people. They were special moments of faith, work and community. The festivals brought people together to share the joy of spring and the spirit of the community. People raised money for their church, celebrated holidays, enjoyed performances and dances and even learned from each other.
Festivals also offered a chance for people to come together across different social classes. Even kings and bishops understood the importance of festivals. Later efforts to suppress these celebrations failed.
These festivals were about renewal:
Renewal of faith
Renewal of community
Renewal of moral values
The York Rite Spring Festival will celebrate in the same spirit.
The York Rite is not just a series of disconnected degrees. It is a system that continues the Blue Lodge story. The United Grand Lodge of England in 1813 recognized that "pure ancient Masonry consists of three degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft and Master Mason - including the Order of the Holy Royal Arch." The Master Mason experience is not complete without the Royal Arch experience.
The York Rite teaches this tradition through three key degrees:
The Chapter of Royal Arch Masons
The Council of Royal and Select Masters
The Commandery of Knights Templar
This is not just a story about a temple. This is about moral architecture and spiritual instruction. This is about the restoration of light.
The York Rite has its roots in history and faith. The degrees themselves are based on English predecessors and even older documents like the Regius Manuscript (circa 1390). However, the York Rite was perfected in America. The York Rite recognizes that its degrees are appendant to Ancient Craft Masonry but not supplanting it.
The York Rite also recognizes the Christian faith and openly proclaims it. A Knight Templar is not just a Mason in armor but a man who confesses his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior and who defends faith, virtue and moral truth.
The York Rite has much to offer to Master Masons, Companions, Sir Knights, families and guests alike. There is much to learn, much to explore, much to gain and much to celebrate. This is a place for open fellowship rooted in history, faith and brotherhood.
