About this Event
Juneteenth at the Byberry Meetinghouse will feature a number of activities!
The Tacony Labs' Threads of History, part of the City's Semiquincentennial celebrations, shines a spotlight on the history of Northeast Philadelphia and the many small organizations that keep that history alive. Artmaking activities will engage young and old with the idea of individual expression in flags and also an opportunity to create a project to keep.
At 6 pm,tours of the Meetinghouse, the library, and the cemeterywill be available along with a short presentation by the Poquessing Trail of History about Robert Purvis and the Forten's, important local figures in the Black abolition movement who had national impact. Robert and his wife, Harriet Forten Purvis, lived across the street and helped thousands of people to escape via the Underground Railroad.
At 7 pm there will be a screening of Sam Katz's film series, In Pursuit..., Episode 4 Common Ground (1790-1838). The film touches on the abolition movement, an important part of the history of the Byberry Meetinghouse.
There will be refreshments. This is a free event but registration is requested:
