Dear colleagues,You are cordially invited to the Institute’s seminar featuring a talk by Lee Aldar entitled “Identity Management in Times of Conflict: Insights from the Israel–Gaza War.” The presentation will introduce research grounded in identity management theory, examining how members of a national majority navigate the tension between group identification and moral concern when confronted with reports of atrocities committed by their ingroup. Drawing on a large-scale study of Jewish Israelis (N = 1,537), the talk will outline four distinct identity-management profiles that emerged during the Israel–Gaza war—ranging from denial and justification to distancing, redefining group belonging, and challenging ingroup behaviour. These patterns are systematically linked to differences in perceived threat, moral emotions, and policy preferences.
