About this Event

Date: October 17th & 18th, 2026

Time: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Location: Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts & Agriculture

In this workshop, students explore discharge printing and natural dyes. Each participant spends time designing and creating their own stamps or opt for hand painting/mark-making and create unique printed cotton cloth pieces dyed with local plants.

On day one, participants prepare and mordant fabric in a mix of metallic salts, and then use thickened citric acid paste to draw the mordant out of the fibers creating negative space with either hand carved blocks or brushstrokes.

On the second day, time is spent making multiple dye vats of varying color to create a wide range of shades and patterns. Time is spent covering fabric preparation, pattern design, carving blocks, natural dye chemistry and philosophy, as well as fabric care and sourcing.

All materials will be provided.

No natural dye experience required.

For ages 16 and older. Those under age 16 may attend accompanied by an adult.

About the Instructor:

Delia Perez is a textile artist, natural dyer and educator working with plant pigments and recycled textiles. Raised in south Louisiana, Delia moved to Oregon after graduating with a degree in graphic design to pursue letterpress printing and botanical illustration where she fell in love with farming, foraging, and plant identification. She began block-printing on reclaimed fabrics and clothing in 2016 and in an effort to move more towards sustainable art practices, discovered natural dyes, a craft she has studied for just over five years now.

Now based outside Portland, Oregon, she works at a small clothing consignment shop and experiments from her backyard home studio-- dyeing with locally foraged and garden-grown plants, teaching workshops, and recently started a small business for reworking clothing called Loop Mending.
