Gente is the result of a slow maturation process, well-considered and meticulously planned. The title, which means ‘people’ in Portuguese, is a collection of encounters, stories and dreams of people. Nancy Vieira, now approaching the half-century mark, combines tradition with contemporary influences to link Cabo Verde and Lisbon, where she lives today. She switches blithely between Cape Verdean Creole and Portuguese as genres such as samba and fado come eye to eye. Gente is an encounter whose handshake you want to feel.
