Meet Nancy Castaldo and dive headfirst with her into the history of environmental activism in the Hudson River watershed and learn how you can help organizations like Riverkeeper protect clean water around the globe!
Every inch of the United States is in a river’s watershed. But in 1966, one of our most important watersheds was dying. Dead fish washed up on the Hudson River’s shores, and the once-clear water reeked of oil. With too much pollution to support human or animal life, America’s “First River” was in too deep—until a Riverkeeper, a pioneering group of environmental activists, fought to get rivers around the globe out of troubled waters.
Nancy's new book for younger readers Whales in the City is a kid-friendly picture book that is a true story about how community action saved the whales of New York Harbor and reversed the effects of climate change. Spanning from pre-colonization to today, learn how the industrial revolution, overfishing, and pollution drove whales away from New York Harbor and the Hudson River by the early 20th Century.
Nancy Castaldo has written books about our planet for over 20 years. Her title, THE STORY OF SEEDS: From Mendel’s Garden to Your Plate, and How There’s More of Less To Eat Around The World, earned the 2017 Green Earth Book Award and was a Junior Library Guild Selection. Her recent BACK FROM THE BRINK: Saving Animals from Extinction earned stars from Kirkus and Booklist, a Crystal Kite Award, Eureka NF Book Silver Award, and a Sigurd. F. Olsen Best Nature book Honorable Mention among others. Nancy believes strives to inform, inspire, and empower her readers with each book. Her research has taken her all over the world from the Galapagos Islands to Russia and she loves sharing her adventures with her readers.
