Area residents and visitors may have encountered Callahan’s complex and multilayered work at Fenimore Art Museum in 2023. In Obsession, two retro clock-shaped pieces offer mesmerizing tableaux with Victorian-era ephemera. Another fantastical construction, Your Goose is Cooked, presents an other-worldly creature and scenery that creates a fantastical allure. Known for her mastery of book art, she will also discuss two curious ‘built books’ on display, books that don’t open—but tell a story. Callahan regularly collects old-fashioned toys and vintage Victoriana, carefully stored treasures which she sifts through and assembles. “Like a dreamer letting down their guard for the night, I give myself over to the work in the studio day after day… as though moving in a dream.” She never quite knows where a project is going, she noted, and is guided by intuition, not a plan. The overall effect is pure magic.
. As always visitors are invited to park on the gallery grounds not on the town road.
