You walk across St Ives Bridge almost without thinking. You pass the chapel, perhaps glance at its stonework. But how much do we really know about this medieval structure that has shaped our town for centuries?
This July, former Norris Museum curator Bob Burn-Murdoch returns to share what he knows about one of our most remarkable buildings. And, more importantly, what he doesn’t know!
What was on this spot before the bridge was built? When was the first bridge constructed and what did it look like? When was the current bridge and chapel built, and how different was it from what we see today? What were the Roundheads really trying to achieve when they broke the bridge in 1645? How has the chapel been altered, restored – and unrestored – in every century since?
The answer to all these questions is “We don’t know!” Come along and hear how a real expert at not knowing things can spin that out into an evening’s entertainment!
After a decade away from public speaking, Bob brings fresh insights into the questions that still puzzle historians and locals alike: the bridge's engineering secrets, the chapel's hidden history, and the stories the stones themselves are still waiting to tell us.
This is a rare opportunity to hear from someone who knows this building intimately – not just the facts and dates, but the many mysteries that remain unsolved.
