MY MOTHER’S BONES is a collaborative two-person exhibition by Rachel Levy and Alex Bookless exploring women’s lived experiences through the lens of folklore and fairytale. Rachel and Alex aim to explore and rewrite the often limiting roles women have been allowed to play in cultural mythologies through the medium of relief printing (linocut). It is intended that these images and narratives shown here strengthen the general mythology from which our culture’s identity of women is crafted.
Rachel Levy (@BrokenBottlePrints) is a writer, printmaker, and photographer based in Juneau. Her work centers on themes related to the environment, re-wilding the self, and ethical travel and exploration. Rooted in her art practice is a commitment to building community, and central to her experience has been the cooperative art space where she hand-prints each piece and the cooperative art gallery where she sells her work alongside other local artists.
Alex Bookless is a local Juneau artist who uses a wide array of visual media to explore the topics that she finds herself drawn to. Often concentrating on environmental, social, and place based topics, she strives to use the design and narrative cues in her artwork to tell a story. Relief printing with linoleum is a more recent addition to her tool belt and she has quickly developed a love for linocut.
