Incandescence — Villani-Jamieson Duo presents Te Ao Trio
The saxophone is often associated with jazz, yet its expressive range extends far beyond a single genre. This programme explores the instrument's many voices, from the intimate lyricism of Bernhard Brumcke's Notturno to the fiery energy of Thérèse Brenet's Incandescence, the rhythmic vitality of MO'INGUS, and the dramatic landscapes of Robert Sluka's Sonata for Saxophone and Piano.
Alongside these works are contemporary voices from Aotearoa and the US. The concert concludes with the unmistakable passion and colour of Astor Piazzolla's Primavera Porteña, bringing together soprano saxophone, baritone saxophone and piano in a celebration of rhythm, melody and dance.
Featuring saxophonists Michael Jamieson (baritone sax) and Tomomi Arita (soprano, alto sax), two of New Zealand's most active and versatile performers, working alongside Flavio Villani at the piano, this programme showcases the extraordinary breadth of the saxophone repertoire, revealing an instrument capable of tenderness, brilliance, humour and profound expression.
