Australian cellist Charlotte Miles joins as soloist in Tchaikovsky’s refined and nostalgic Rococo Variations, a deftly written tribute to Mozartian elegance which exhibits the full expressive and virtuosic range of the cello.
A sense of the mystical and spooky is apparent in Franck’s tale of a huntsman cursed to eternal pursuit by demons, in Saint-Saëns’ depiction of skeletons dancing on their graves in Danse macabre, and in Gounod’s story of a marionette losing its life in a duel.
Lili Boulanger’s sweet and playful D’un matin de printemps brings a lighter mood, and the program is completed with a grandiose and powerful fanfare from Dukas.
