“Rockism, the Industry, and Melancholy. What’s Wrong with Contemporary Music?”At our monthly lectures, we usually talk about what makes us love music. This meeting is different. Together with journalist and music critic Nikolai Ovchinnikov, we’ll discuss why this might be the worst period in 21st-century music so far.
• How pop music has burned out in its pursuit of quality
• Why the very ideas of “quality” and “professionalism” can be dangerous for the pop scene
• How Russian-language rock has gone into a steep decline
• How the pursuit of comfort and tenderness is killing indie music
• Why new albums by ASAP Rocky and Taylor Swift no longer feel like major cultural events
• Will things ever get better?
• Or are all of the above claims complete nonsense?
Let’s argue, reflect, and discuss.
