About this Event
Queering the Museum: An Edmonia Lewis LGBTQ+ History Teach-In
Saturday, May 30 · Noon–3PM
Downtown Salem - Exact location to be announced
Edmonia Lewis was a trailblazer — a Black and Indigenous sculptor who built an international career in 19th-century Rome on her own terms. PEM's exhibition Said in Stone is a stunning opportunity to see her work. However, the exhibit overlooks Lewis' queer and trans community connections.
Queer History Boston is hosting a community meet-up and teach-in on May 30th. Explore the exhibition and join us to dig into the queer interpretation of Lewis's life and world that the show leaves out. We'll have copies of our new zine Archival Silences: Was Edmonia Lewis Queer? to share, along with by Margaret Middleton — a guide to finding the queer histories hiding in plain sight in cultural institutions.
This is a drop-in event. Come for the whole afternoon or just part of it. Bring a friend. Bring your questions.
Meeting location and additional details to be announced — check back here or follow us @queerhistoryboston for updates.
