About this Event

Explore the fascinating world of plants and medicine with the RCP Garden and Museum teams after hours.

Discover how plants from the RCP garden of medicinal plants have been, and in some cases still are, used in medicine with tours throughout the evening from expert garden guides. Plus enjoy a mini-display of some of the beautiful botanical books that illustrate these plants from our Heritage Library.

Explore the garden

The garden will be open to explore throughout the evening and there will be the opportunity to join one of several tours of the garden. These will be guided by our Garden Fellows – expert guides who are all qualified physicians and fellows of the RCP with a special interest in plants and medicine.

The RCP garden of medicinal plants isn't your typical garden. It is unique in that almost every one of the 1000+ species of plant here has a link to medicine.

The myriad of stories they tell come from diverse cultures, different countries and from every age in recorded history. The real joy of the garden is in this unique collection of plants that offer living examples of the history of medicine from ancient Egypt to the life-saving prescription drugs of today.

Explore our historic collections

Discover how some of the medicinal plants have been used historically in a mini-display of botanical texts from our Heritage Library.

Plus, take the opportunity to explore the rest of our museum after hours including exhibition ‘A body of knowledge: 500 years of book collecting at the RCP’, the Hoffbrand collection of apothecary jars, fine art portraits, medical implements and more.

Schedule

  • 5.30pm – 8pm – registration, garden of medicinal plants, mini-display of botanical books and museum open
  • 6pm, 6.30pm and 7pm – Garden tours
  • 6.15pm & 7.15pm – ‘A body of knowledge’ exhibition tours
  • 8pm – close

The Regent’s Perk café will be open for free tea and coffee throughout the evening and there will be a refreshment station in the Garden.
